Types of Collections
Two types of collections can be created to assign and organize products: Manual and Automatic. Automatic collections can be defined by a set of conditions within Shopify to fetch products that belong to the collection when they respect expected rules. The conditions are currently limited to the following options:
- Product Title
- Product Type
- Product Category
- Product Vendor
- Product Tag
- Price
- Compare-at price
- Weight
- Inventory stock
- Variant’s title
- Metafields (Requires additional configuration within metafield definition.)
You may also choose to have a combination of these conditions to ensure products that match ALL conditions defined are grouped together in the collection, or that products that match ANY of the multiple conditions defined can be grouped together in the collection.
Assigning Collections to Products
Manual collections can be assigned to products by simply adding them within the products through the backend or via an import process.
Automated collections are assigned to products based on the rules products respect. This assignment is automatically handled by Shopify and can take a few minutes to show up on the frontend due to Shopify needing to reindex.

In order to auto-map collections from Akeneo to Shopify, you must:
- Assign the item to a category in Akeneo.
- In Malcom, create the synchronization path from “collections” to “categories” in Step 3.3 - Product Mapping - Metafields.
- Head to your Shopify settings and add the conditions within the collection itself.
